Thanks all for sharing your thoughts and continued patience with a newcomer. I will work on some more detailed photos. I am really anxious to find out what I have--or don't have.

Best wishes,

What a beautiful piece of wood and suburb refinish work overall! Looks like a very nice sporter. The pics are appreciated.

After a lot of consideration, I have decided to sell this rifle--but I do not know how to price it. Any suggestions on what it is worth?

Many thanks,

Hal: You never provided adequate photos to assess the value of your pleasant looking Krag.
We never got a look at the forward part of your "carbine".

What we can see is refinished 1898 or 1899 metal, put into some type of incorrect model 1896 stock, also refinished.

We can't yet tell if you have a carbine or 'cut-down' rifle. You have a 'non-armory mix' of model parts.

The value of your Krag is the utility value and the value of its refinished parts.
The 'cuteness' of your Krag increases the utility value a bit.

A real carbine stock is worth more than a cut-down rifle stock to someone, who needs one.
A carbine barrel is worth more than a shortened rifle barrel.

A good place to sell is on GunBroker, but this requires clear, close, and complete photos, so people can see what they are actually bidding for.

What’s the serial number?

I do like the finish on it — lots of questions as I am going through my own conservation process.

It was 2 1/2 years ago that most of this thread was posted.

The OP just 'reopened' it today, don't expect too much information! :D

Thanks for your responses
Will try more detailed photos-
I bought it because it looked nice--no idea of its history. Been in the safe for years and never shot it. Appreciate your help with identification.

Hi, Hal! Welcome back! We are still interested in helping you to examine your Krag and help determine its value. There are three things we need pictures of- the front sight and muzzle, the top and sides of the rear sight, and the left side of the receiver with the information and serial number visible. These would help us a ton in addition to what we have already seen. Are there any tools in the butt stock? Any other issues or observations?

If you are still having picture issues, we can help.

Thanks!
