This Butt-Plate from the General Frederick Dent Grant "Presentation model 1899 carbine", that Whig found on the R.I. Auction Site, is a good example of three different finishes found on pristine U.S. Krags.
The case-harden 'door', blackened 'screw-head', and "browning" (a.k.a. rust-blue) of the butt-plate are finishes that were easily worn thin or changed to a patina in time.
This is why it is so cringe worthy when someone wants to get their Krag "re-blued and make everything the same color".
