1899 Krag carbine

Post by Jeff L »

I bought my fourth krag rifle, but this is my first carbine. It's a 1899 carbine. Serial number is 288611 and it has a 1900 Cartouche date. Maybe I should have did some more research before I bought it, but I had not seen one in this good of condition before. I also bought a rifle from him that's in real good shape also. From what I read about it. It looks like it has a rifle rear sight. There is no c on it. I can't find an r on it though either. It does not have the hump on the handguard. But from what I'm reading. This one probably didn't come out with that on it original. Would the correct site be a 1896 C sight Or should it have the 1901C?
I wish I could post pictures of it but it is saying they are too big and I can't figure out how to resize them. Thanks for any information you can give me. .

Hi Jeff
No expert at all, they will be along. Your carbine seems to be late in the first run of the 1899 carbines. There were no rifle sights installed by S.A. on a carbine
I believe both 1896 or probably a 1901 carbine sights would be correct. And as you say a 1901 hand guard is installed.
Maybe someone robbed the carbine sight in the civilian world due to value of the sight?
How's the bore? Hope it's a shooter for you.
Pics are tough, they tend to go way large here. You need to control the KB size and I could not do it at first. New I'phone now and maybe I can do it next time.

"Jeff L." - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

None of the Krag rifle sights were marked with an "R", but, the various Krag carbine sights did have a variety of "C" marks.
(A basic and inexpensive Krag Book, like Joe Poyer's, "The American Krag Rifle and Carbine", can educate you about this stuff and increase your enjoyment of Krags).

Your U.S. Model 1899 carbine, number 288611, was likely assembled around September or October, 1900.

It is feasible your carbine first had the model 1896 carbine rear sight and was updated later to the model 1901 carbine sight.

Shoot and enjoy your Krag, as is. Be patient and you will eventually run into a reasonably priced 1901 carbine rear-sight. The rifle hand-guard is 'correct' on early model 1899 carbines.

Attached are some photos of my m-1901 carbine rear-sight and a correct 1899 carbine front-sight blade.ImageImageImage

The 1901 carbine sight Just has a c on the side of the sight? The rails are marked for up to 2,300 feet, but there is no see stamped on them?

The 1901 carbine rear-sight has three "C" stamps.

The leaf is calibrated to 2,300 yards, (rifle leaf only 2,000).

The side of the base is marked '5' for 500 yards. (The rifle base is marked '4').

The inside edges of the carbine sight-leaf 'rails' are parallel to outside edges. (The rifle leaf 'rails' have a built in angle, to left, for bullet drift).
