Re: Observed Serial Number List
Thanks Gents, acronyms are above my 'pay grade', I appreciate the list and explanation.
Then Culpeper dazzles me, by putting Parashooter's single column list in numeric order!
Ned steps up and commits to all these numbers becoming part of the database.
I'm getting dizzy and have to go sit down.
Thanks again to all, especially 'Knute', who found this obscure Congressional
Report, (containing a collection of documents), that revealed the use of Krag rifles by Pribilof Island residents to protect the Fur Seal Nurseries.
FWIW - I wonder if the original Pribilof listing of rifle serial numbers, in a seeming haphazard order, indicates something about how the Krags were grouped in rifle shipping crates?
Inventory 'ID' cards that documented the contents of each crate (as shipped by the Ordnance Department), may have just been copied (as grouped), when completing accounting form for Ordnance stores.
Attached Photo: 1903 Springfield rifle 'crate inventory cards' from a later era.

Re: Observed Serial Number List
Thanks Para!! IIRC, I'm supposed to have (at least limited) editing access, but will have to check with Ned to see if I am remembering correctly, and if so, how to do it. I REALLY wish at least some of the suggestions from my 2019 post - right after the list appeared - had been/could be implemented, as it has grown into the weed-covered tangle that I feared. It's not too late, but the task becomes greater with every incautious entry. On the bright side, at least we have the numbers themselves, and the list IS growing. Cheers.

Re: Observed Serial Number List
I am brand new here & I don't belong to any other sights like this so I apologize now if I am in the wrong place with the wrong question.
I have the opportunity to pick up a nice looking Krag. I haven't had the opportunity to meat her in person yet but I hope to soon .I am having a hard time matching the model & serial # with the correct information. On the left side it reads 1894 Springfield Armory then the 4 digit # 3963 I assume that would be the serial. I know what they say about assuming though. The fact that it reads 1894 doesn't automatically make it a model 1894 does it? I understand that sometimes in antiquities thing aren't always laid out in numerical order as logic would predict.
Other than the fact that it looks pretty good I can't tell you anything else. If I end up getting it I am sure I will get the bug. If this one is a wall hanger or a safe queen I am quite sure I won't stop until I get at least one shooter. I don't believe in changing the way these old girls were originally designed. Except if I am building a shooter & safety dictates I do so. Like I said "If I do get a hold of this one I have a feeling I will lose the ability to function properly until I get one that I can hunt with. I am known for showing up on hunting trips with very unusual firearms. At the time I don't reload so I usually won't ever put more than 1 box through anything I buy then I move on to the next obsession .I just noticed that I got a little carried away here
that won't happen every time just had to make sure you all get a picture of my eccentric personality.
I hope this finds everyone safe & in good health
Thanks

Re: Observed Serial Number List
Mr. Nick,
Welcome to the Krag's Collector's Association! You are venturing into known territories whereby the acquisition of one Krag often becomes addictive and leads to many, many more. I admit that I am a Krag addict, as are many others here. We will be glad to help you along into your possible Krag venture as much as we can.
First, you have posted your first Krag note onto an existing "thread". We quickly forgive you for doing so since you are new to this. Maybe the administrator can repost this to its own thread and give it higher special attention that it is due.
Second, you sound like you have connected with what might be an interesting Krag rifle in different ways. The original Model 1892 Krags were actually produced starting in 1984. Your Krag's receiver is marked 1894 because it is one of those earlier ones made in 1894. If it still has the cleaning rod (ramrod) in place in a channel underneath the barrel, or if the channel is still there but empty, you might have an unaltered or un-updated Model 1892 Krag. Many, or most, of the early Model 1892 Krags were updated to a Model 1896 Krag whereby the ramrod channel underneath the barrel was filled in (you can see that filled in area still), had a hold open notch cut into the top of the receiver to hold the bolt open for reloading purposes, had a curved butt toe cut and a change in the metal butt plate to have a trap door that opens to hold the cleaning rod pieces, a rounded off muzzle was cut, as well as a couple other changes. Many early Krags that were updated have different parts on the rifle depending on what was changed.
Also, many Krags have been damaged, altered unofficially, or made into shorter "sporterized" hunting riles for later use. All of this was done outside of the official Springfield Armory arsenal. These changes often significantly devalue the military collectible value of the Krag.
So, thirdly, we would ask, if you are able, to get some pictures of this Krag and post them here so we can drool and examine your rifle and make comments about what you have and what value might be there.
We do love to see pictures of new Krags that haven't been shown and discussed here before.
Ask any questions and we'll be glad to help! Welcome again!

Re: Observed Serial Number List
It just dawned (or re-dawned, I'm getting old) on me that the SRS data is not included in our list.
Was this for "legal" reasons, or just not wanting to do so? If the former, I THINK that if JUST the basic technical data, such as serial, model, and perhaps record date were copied there would be NO problem - certainly none of THOSE are copyrightable, and would not infringe in the least upon their ability to provide letters with the juicy stuff. And, we're not doing it for profit. Many items that we track are not listed anyhow. Somehow, SRS should get credit (a y/n column?) for the data, and of course, some of "our" numbers are also on SRS, so we'd have to watch for duplicates.
To dredge up a point that is near and dear to MY heart at least, the incorporation of that data would be an EXCELLENT time to make any desired changes to the layout. I also see there are some 8xxxxx numbers on the list - couldn't those just be "edited" to 3xxxxx? There is NO reason to perpetuate such an obvious error on a scholarly list, and the submitter should be thankful, not offended.
Dick is now getting off his soapbox and heading for a nice dish of Pablum . . . . .
