Intro and evaluation of 1899 carbine

Post by pickax »

Hello to all.
long time lurker, first time poster here. Mostly interested in 1903's, but Krags have tugged at me also.
I'm excited by my purchase last month of what I consider a nice SA carbine without civilian mods.
I had some help from Rick Slater(RTL) in my confusion over the 1896 carbine sight, but he found that to be correct through his Mallory book, so I purchased the carbine.
I've enjoyed reading the older threads here and gained quite a bit from that, but would appreciate any further info I may have missed.
I have pictures on my PC to post, but want to avoid the giant over sized pics with to much background. If someone will give a quick tutorial on proper sizing, I'll get them up for your evaluation.
Thank in advance.
Brad

I use windows "paint" to size a photo (reduce the size so that it is in KCA limits) but the paint "crop" function does not work on JPGs.

The editing software that came with my Pentax camera does allow cropping, so you need to find some photo editing program or software that allows cropping to reduce the area in the photo. When you have done that and the photo is still too big for KCA then I would open it in "paint" then use the resize function in the upper left of the screen. Try 90% first then save it to a different name so you do no damage to the original. Check the photo's size to see if it is in the limit. If not delete the copy and try a smaller percentage till you get it done.

pickax- hope you can get those pictures to us. We love helping to evaluate newly acquired Krags of all sorts. It's the best way for us to learn also. Every one is different and has a different history.

On my Mac, I just open a picture and go to the top and click under "tools" and there is a selection to adjust the size. You need a picture under something like 700 KB if I remember. You can post up to 5 pictures on each posting. We often just do multiple postings to put up more than 5 pictures. The more the better for us!

Thank you fredc. I couldn't see any cropping function on my windows 8, I'm not very computer literate so will try your suggestions.
Thanks

I try to take well focused pictures and reduced them to 200 KB or less. This makes them infinitely more view-able and useful, when posted on the KCA Forum.

The attached example is only 55KB.Image

Well the pics aren't quite large enough. so here are links to same but larger. carbine has a good bore, 1896 carbine sights, and serial is 230137 which I believe makes the sight correct. Cartouche is unreadable. Gun appears SA refurbed due to line inside loading gate.

This does show us that a picture needs to be as clear as possible and size doesn't matter- the bigger the better, if it is small enough to fit the forum posting. I can't see much at all. I'd try to get them 400-600 KB in size. Thanks for keeping at it to help us see your nice carbine better!

New links to same pics enlarged, added above. Hate to do all that individual clicking but it works. I have Mallory 2'nd edition, and Farmers book is enroute, so looking forward to that.
I'm also thinking a light Mineral spirit scrub to the wood might bring out the cartouche and some nice grain peeking out. Any thoughts on that?
