Can I use this sight?

Hello Im new to this great forum and the Krag rifle. I just recently purchased a 1898 carbine and was wondering about a no drill peep sights. I found this one on the net but wasnt sure if its intended to mount on the right side of the receiver or was the aperture placed on the wrong side of the sight.

The sight that you pictured appears to be a Redfield 102K, intended as a 'no-drill' Receiver-Sight, for the Left-Side of a U.S. Krag.

It looks like someone has simply screwed in the 'aperture' on the wrong side of the slide!

The bottom of the 'Slide' for the 102K has a small "k" stamped on it.

To mount on a Krag, the 102K sight requires a longer 'side-plate screw'.

Redfield originally provided such a screw with the sight.

Mounted on the rear of the sight is a little sheet-metal bracket that hooks into the cut-off lever opening.

A replacement side-plate screw can be fashioned from a Krag or 1903 Springfield 'sling-swivel or stacking-swivel' screw. Reproduction swivel screws are available. (Thread size is approximately .186"X26TPI).

FWIW - Redfield 'No Drill Screw' improvise

Replacement screw made from reproduction 1903 Springfield stacking-swivel screw.

Repro Krag or 1903 Springfield (barrel-band/sling-swivel or stacking-swivel) screws will work.

(Note - Original swivel screws had their tips 'mushroomed'. They might be too distorted to screw into side-plate screw hole).

Thank you guys for the info I guess Ill try to buy it. As soon as I figure out how to post more then pic at a time Ill post some of my new to me carbine.
Im pretty excited about firing it, i already picked up new Hornady brass and have dies coming.

The Redfield 102K sight shows up fairly often on ebay for around $75 to $90.

The one you are considering seems to lack the Redfield (side-plate) mounting screw and the flat 'spring/cover', that goes against the slide, under the large coin-slotted screw.

The slide looks to be correct, but, is marked "2" rather than "k".

Thanks for pointing out the spring/cover BR. I thought this old Western I had was missing it, but it was behind the staff. Looks neater with the item where it belongs.

Glad to be of help.

I have found that 'plate', misplaced behind the staff, on a couple of Redfield 102 sights.

It is intended to be on the front. It serves as a cover, spring-washer/tensioner, and index 'pointer' for the elevation scale.

Having the plate behind, and the screw outside of the staff, appears to wear the bluing excessively. I'll have to touch that up, see if it lasts better with the plate where it belongs.
