Krag 1898 Identification + Buttplate Suggestions?

Post by heffernw »

I recently purchased an 1898 Krag (20-20.5" barrel) that I cannot classify. It seems to be of carbine length and weight, but other examples of 1898 carbines have slightly different stocks (from what I've seen). It is in nice shape with an exception being that it is missing the buttplate. As seen in the picture, there is no hole drilled in the top for the second screw to hold a normal Krag buttplate in. Any ideas on what exactly this rifle is and what buttplate it should use?ImageImageImageImage

'heffernw' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

Your Krag appears to be a model 1898 rifle that has been shortened at both ends.

Wood was cut off the butt, probably to fit a rubber butt-pad.

Your barrel and stock forearm have been cut to non-standard length. This was not done by Springfield.

Your Krag was likely altered for Hunting purposes by a past Civilian owner.

A picture of your barrel's front sight would be interesting.

Thanks for the reply, I'll post a picture of the front sight. It seems like this is definitely a sporter type rifle, thankfully it still retains the old school look and feel. Image

'heffernw' - Clearly altered for Hunting, your Krag should be a fun shooter, if the bore is decent. Best solution for the lack of butt-plate would probably be a slip-on or screw-mounted pad.
