Went to a LGS today not looking to buy any rifles, just looking for deals on parts and misc stuff. I found 2 1896 Krag Carbines on consignment for sale. Can someone validate if the following serial numbers fall into a known carbine block please? (74142 and 74396).
Both appear to have correct 1896 carbine sights with the ladder marked to 20 and the C on the top right and on the right side at the back. Both barrels measure 22" from the muzzle to closed bolt face and the front sight bases and crowns appear to be correct as well. I did buy 74396 as the price was below $200. It is in a very nice sporter stock and the bore is good. It was filthy but is cleaning up nice. I will post pictures this weekend if I can get time and have some good natural light.
The asking price on 74142 is $595.00. On the fence on this one as the bore looks poor, the stock is a mess but has all of the hardware. May go back and make a very much lower offer based on condition and see what happens.
Thanks,
Zg

'Zgun' - Both of the model 1896 Krags (in question) are in a known 'carbine serial number range'. FWIW - the 1896 carbine rear-sights routinely sell for over $400. Good Find!

BUY BOTH!!!!!!.......Make one good one!!!!
Re: LGS Visit today
Thanks Butlersrangers for the confirmation on both being in a known carbine block of serial numbers. I knew about the rear sight being worth 400 or more from your postings here. When I realized the rear sight was an original carbine sight it was a no brainer to purchase this one.

Absolutely!!! You already stole the first one - don't worry about the second one - it sounds like you should be able to wind up with a totally free (or perhaps even better) carbine.
Rule: when shooting fish in a barrel, shoot ALL the fish!

LOL Dick, I do believe that is good sage advice.

My advice:
When 'Shooting fish in a barrel', use someone else's barrel!
