What is the general serial number range where the stamping changed?

There are, IIRC, about 7000 pieces (both rifles and carbines) marked "1896", which is, numerically, the scarcest date marking to be found, while "1895" is the second scarcest.

The lower change may (according to Mallory) have some overlap, but the upper limit probably occurs around 37100. For many years, I've owned "1896" rifle 37045, and have asked if anyone could top it - hasn't happened yet. Did you find something, or, was that just an academic question?

Thank you, sir. I will keep an eye out for a higher number. My 34034 must be in the middle of all those 7000. I have heard 5000 bandied around too. It had a rifle barrel and full stock but bored out to take .30-06 rounds when I bought it. It was in full military attire.

Somewhat academic. I may have read it incorrectly some where on KCA when I read that all of the 1896 were supposed to be carbines. Perhaps it was a too much Christmas candy induced halucination.
