Sportarized 1898 Krag original manufacture date

A buddy picked up a sportarized carbine length barreled 1898 Krag w/ a M1903 type front site base and no rear sight. Pretty sure it was not originally a carbine. Looking for born on date and opinion of which rear sight to install. SN is 331795

Your friend's Krag, #331795, was likely built around June, 1901, as a rifle. A carbine built in that period would be marked model 1899.
