I have an 1896 thats been sporterized. I'm not sure if it was originally a carbine or not. Serial 36966 Wondering if it worth trying to bring it back to old looks or just make it shootable.

'someoldkrag': Welcome to the KCA Forum.

If you post some clear closeup pictures of your Krag, especially the sights, you will get more complete feedback.

Howdy, and welcome to the forum!

Nice looking Krag! Hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like the front band has a sling swivel on it. Also the stock appears to be a rifle stock which has been shortened to carbine length, which is common for some sporters. What is the length of the barrel measured from the muzzle to the closed bolt face? A true carbine would be 22 inches exactly, and then the front sight would have to be correct also. If it's a banded sight, it is almost certainly a cutoff barrel. As Butlersrangers said, close up pictures of the front sight and rear sight will help.

'aggieczechman' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. It's good to see an enthusiast Hunting with a Krag! What loading did you use to Down your wild pig?

(Paul, 'aggieczechman' was not the O.P. with the questions about his Krag).

Yeah,
Aggie does make the point that even if it is not practical to return one to original collectors condition they are a very useful hunting guns. Legendary smoothness makes for fast follow up shots.

We still want to see "Sameold's Krag."Image
