Early prototype rear sight base?

These unused & unfinished Springfield Armory sight bases have been around forever.
That they shared components with the model 1902 Krag sight is unmistakable.
Does anyone know what they were really for? I have seen mention of 1900 or 1901 Springfield prototype? They are made of steel with an ID of .798 inch on the barrel rings, which is too small for Rod-Bayonet 1903 Springfield.
Pretty cool machine work! They look new, but, are old. (A Krag 1902 sight leaf inserted for drama)!
