i think i've seen this once on tv, but i can't remember. wasn't it (bannarman) an armory or some such, converted to bannerman castle? i could be wrong....

Bannerman was born in Dundee, Scotland, and the family moved to the U.S, when he was three, (around 1853).
I don't think the family name changed. Francis 'Frank' Bannerman built the "Castle Arsenal", commencing about 1905.
The island complex served as warehousing, advertising to passing boats and trains, and a family summer home.
The 'retail-sales' were through the store in N.Y.C.
"Arsenal" kind of fits the nature, amount, and scope of the armaments Bannerman bought, sold, and stored.
He never bought a government armory, but, likely bought the contents of a few!
