Thank you for allowing me to join the group!
I ran across a Krag today and I hope you guys don't mind me posting a few pics for evaluation. Any input or guesses at value would be appreciated. I do know it is a Springfield 1898 made in 1902. other than that, I'm thinking it is a cut down rifle. It is for sale at $600 USD. Is that good, ok, horrible price?

You are correct it is a cut down rifle and is at least priced double what it is worth

'Jasonafair' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

A good percentage of U.S. Krag rifles were cut-down for Hunting, once they began to get into civilian hands in the late 1920's.

Such Krags have good utility value, but, the collector interest is small.

I agree with Ned, that this Krag is only worth around $300. Most 'Sportered' Krags do not sell well; if you buy one, it is best to plan to keep it!
That said, a reasonably priced 'cut-down' Krag can be quite useful and a lot of fun.

This Krag, #414299, was built around September, 1902, as a rifle with a 30 inch barrel.
The military stock on this Krag has simply been shortened in the forearm.
The barrel was cut to its current length and a banded front sight was installed, possibly by the "Christy Gun Works" back in the 1950's.
The rear sight is the U.S. Krag model 1902 sight.

That Christy front base with the Marble sight is so tall would someone using that combo need to set the rear sight high in order to be on target?

I don't believe the 'Christy' front-sight on the OP's rifle is as tall as the 1903 Springfield sight, that is commonly seen on cut-down Krags.

With the 1903 front-sight, it is often necessary to set the rear sight to 400 yards for shots to hit 'point of aim' at 50 yards.

I think, 200 yards might shoot to 'point of aim' at 50 yards with this rig.

I just got lucky and got the Brophy book off of eBay for $85 shipped!!!!
Now to digest all of that info and start a search.
