It appears 'camphor' has changed a bit and is now in a synthetic version.
Back in Dr. Hudson's time, it appears it was a waxy substance or a ground powder, made from the bark of an Asian Camphor tree.
It use to be used to make Moth Balls.
"Cat Man's" description of the 'Horde of Soot Mouches' at Camp Perry, kind of conjures images of the "Blessing of a fleet of pleasure boats" or "Pets", by the Parish Priest!
"The Smoking of the Sights", sounds a bit religious .... I like that! You could probably throw in a "Demon Out" .... or two! ... grant a little absolution, bless a rifle or box of reloads!
Once the sights are blackened, protect the soot coating!
