Hey guys just bought another Krag. The seller claims the serial number which is 75989 is in the carbine range but I don't agree from the info I've found and I know you guys will know. Also it's missing the magazine cut off and I know they are useless but I like them. Can you guys help me with which cut off i need? from what I know there are 2 different types and the 1896 could have either. Also I should have known better but when I disassembled it the stock is all burnt like it was through a fire. Also the monte carlo stock looks great in my opinion but your cheek is up so high it just doesnt make sense. Thanks in advance to all of you.
Edit: just wanted to say the sporterization of Krags makes me cry....

This is the damage on the stock. Im curious if it can even be fired or if it will break in half.

Not sure what it means but I see distortion around the screw holes, to me that indicates a lot of buffing before the bluing job. Surprised to see the model and serial numbers so crisp. Maybe they concentrated on the screw holes to remove raised burrs and lightly buffed the model and serial numbers? I like sporter stocks to get your eye centered for the sights for quick shooting (coyotes, pigs, and wild dogs do not hold still very long) most here shoot at events where they are looked down on.

Hi indy650,

Your Krag was manufacture between Sep - Oct 1897 according to Joe Poyer's book "The American Krag Rifle and Carbin".

Your Krag is not listed among known Krags in Mallory's "The Krag Rifle Story". FWIW, your serial number, even though is not listed, is among many carbines that are.

Check out Granpa's gun parts or EBAY for a replacement cut off:

https://www.granpasgunparts.com/1896-krag

Back in the day when Springfield Krags flooded the market for a few bucks... many found their way in the hands of sportsman who wanted to make it their own.

Pictured below is one such sporterized Krag that I purchased and then made it my own by refinishing and mounting a scout scope.

The comb on the butt stock really does help with placing my eye level with the scope.

Check out some of the previous forum discussions about mounting scopes and working with sporterized Krags. Some members have done some amazing things by turning an okay sporter into a thing of beauty!

One issue with this sporterized stock is they didnt put a barrel band on the front so the stock just kinda hangs off the barrel. Not sure what I'm gonna do to fix it yet. Guess you could call it a free floating barrel lol
