I love idioms. My father's family came from Argyll, Scotland. They hailed from the Isle of Islay in the Inner Hebrides.
There is a Scottish expression:
" An Isla Man will walk three miles, carrying a saddle & bridle, to catch a horse and ride him one mile".
(I can see a number of interpretations to this expression. Maybe the best that can be said is that we do things the hard way, but with style)!
