Lots of really nice sporterized Krags available for around $350.

The only place I know to look is gunbroker.com and on there the only rifles that go for that low were spray painted black, have rubber buttpads, or just generally poorly restored / sporterized. I guess what drew me to this one is the way that it looked.

Do you have any advice on where I might look for one of these low priced modified krags?

In northern states it is not unusual to see 'sportered' Krags at gun-shows or possibly at a rural gun-shop.

Cabela's stores may have 'trade-in' Krags listed on the internet. A good Krag can be found on GunBroker.

Get the Joe Poyer book, "The American Krag Rifle and Carbine" and begin educating yourself on the subject.

It is helpful to know more than the 'seller'. Many sellers know very little about Krag rifles and carbines; they tend to over-price and misjudge the condition of what they have.

I will look into getting that book and I will keep my eyes open for better opportunities.

I'm thinking of replacing the Rear Sight Ladder Head Peep Plate, Ladder Head, and Ladder Slide Locking Knob. Twenty one dollars from grandpas gun parts. Should I add anything to that list?

I honestly don't know how to tell the condition of the bore or how deep the rifling is.

I don't know why the front sight is so twisted. Assuming it was just bumped.

These krags are mechanically so pretty. Can't wait to get the brass in to try it out!

"MosbyRidge' - It looks like you purchased the 'updated' model 1892 Krag.
Your latest pictures show the metal to be more promising than the GunBroker photos did. Condition and finish are not bad.

The bore does not look horrible and may even clean-up to be very good.
The front-sight base has been filed 'to shape' a bit, but it appears to be original judging by the neat brazing.

Your Bolt assembly is all model 1892, except for the extractor which has a 'hold-open' pin.
This extractor is a correct update, since your receiver has been 'notched' for the pin.

Parts I would suggest are: a new front-sight blade, a pair of rear sling-swivel screws, a 'peep' plate (which is missing from the rear of the sight eye-piece), and a rear-sight elevation slide (the Allen screw has probably messed-up the original threads).

BTW - The large letter on the bottom of your barrel is a "P" for Proofed.

The 'black goop' on your rear-sight and elevation-slide may be gasket-seal or J&B Weld. Likely, this can be dissolved with solvents and cleaned off.
An old bronze bore-brush is good for removing this kind of stuff without harming metal finish.
