I hope these post OK. I think it's a very nice Krag. I wish I had kept some of the others from years ago. At one time I had about 10 US, Danish 8X58s and one nice Norwegian. I have several 8X58RD's in Swede RB's also.

It appears to still have a model 1896 'non-slotted' front barrel-band.

Your front-sight blade is likely a .413" high blade, instead of the shorter 1896 blade, to match-up with the 1901 rear-sight.

IMHO - Your Krag appears to have undergone the arsenal rebuilding process. This would explain the nice state of finish, but faint wood markings.

Your Krag was certainly well cared for, nice finish, crisp screw driver slots. The serial number is a bonus. Especially to the right person. In my old shop location we had the fax number that ended with 0001. I had a salesman tell me he would kill to get such a number. When we moved to the new location, I told the phone company about giving up that fax number and asked about getting some good numbers at the new location. Ask and sometimes you receive, we got 2222 for the phone and 3333 for the fax number.

I have stacks of brass from days past and have other rifles in 30-40 such as a Martini-Henry, a nice Model 99 that is as nice as this one, a beautiful 95 Win made in 1897 and a few others. I have a few hundred rds. loaded and this fall - winter will be loading much more. I usually go on an Elk hunt at a friends place in CO but this year I am taking wife on a two week trip to S. Dakota and then we both have tags for a muzzle loader deer hunt here in NM.
