What is this bolt attachment?

Just saw this Krag for sale on an auction sight. I have never seen this attachment to a Krag bolt cocking piece before. Quite interesting appearing. Also, it appears to be a Model 1892 bolt. Anyone seen this before? It may just be a fancy grip attachment for cocking or un-cocking. Looks neat, though!

First glance it would make it harder to grip. Maybe with gloves it is easier?

I've never seen that before.
Maybe an owner wanted extra eye-protection in case of possible gas blow-back through the bolt and striker-rod assembly?

Almost makes me want to buy it for the novelty and chance to examine it fully close up. Almost. I'm waiting on a CMP 1911 to pay for. Should hear soon!

If that disk is part of the cocking piece, it may be an armory experiment at gas deflection as Br mentioned. I cannot tell from the photos.

You can almost see a box of odd ball experimental pieces like this. Someone says "Let's put this out there and see what kind of confusion we can cause."
Great fun 120 years later.

It almost looks more decorative than functional. Very interesting.

It really looks like the cocking-piece/sear was cut into two parts and screwed onto a threaded firing-pin rod.

The odd device appears to be a washer with a fancy edge, sandwiched between the cocking-piece & sear.

Just a plain washer would have been pretty ugly!

Br, that is a plausible explanation of how it could have been done, I could even do that in less than a day. If it is one piece, I would say the armory did it as an experiment. If it is a multiple piece construction any proficient gunsmith/machinist could have done it, but who knows why.

I repeat myself, but logic dictates, it was for more reassuring eye protection, in the event of high pressure gases entering the bolt, (from pierced primers or a case-head failure, the former owner was a pessimist)!

That does make some sense and a better explanation than anything else other than decorative. Only one I have ever seen.
