Sight repairs

I had an 1899 barreled action given to me. Complete with bolt. It has the original 1899 carbine sight. The ladder is bent a tad and the binding knob needs replacing. I got a knob from Grandpa's as well as the barrel band and band spring I will need. I am looking for a stock. What I really need is someone comfortable with straightening the ladder and replacing that knob.

Ned, thanks for getting me back in with a new password. Much obliged.

Do you mean the Model 1898 or 1902 modified or unmodified with Sgt Peep rear carbine sight? One of these below? No Model 1899 carbine rear sight.

Mark Diute - I bumped an old thread on "Sight Disassembly", (located just below this one).

I should have specified! My 1899 has the 1901 rear sight. Does the binding knob on the 1901 rear sight use a detent spring?

There is no detent-spring on the 'binding knob' of the Krag model 1901 sights.
The knob is simply 'screwed-inward', until the tip of its shaft presses against the side of the leaf.
It binds with friction and pressure.

There is a groove around the threads of the binding-screw shaft.
This is to give clearance for the small pin that goes through 'slide'.
The small pin captures and limits the binding-screw from being removed from the slide.

If the pin is removed, the binding-screw can be fully unscrewed from the slide.

There is also a small 'track' on the inside of the m-1901 sight-slide. This accommodates a raised pin on the eye-piece to lock the parts together, but allows sideways movement (for bullet-drift correction) built into the rifle version 1901 sight-leaf.

Mark has a model 1901 carbine sight with some damage to the 'leaf'.

The link to Grandpa's Gun Parts, that used to be in KCA 'classifieds', seems to be missing.

This vendor has the carbine leaf available on his site for $100 in good condition.
