Mackinaw Island this week

Northern Michigan got its share of snow this week.
The seasons always look remarkable on Mackinaw Island!

No cars, just horses, bicycles, and snowmobiles allowed on the Island.

The permanent residents await the 'Freeze' that creates an Ice Bridge to Saint Ignace on the 'mainland'.
This allows snowmobiling to town to get groceries, see a movie or go to the Casino!

Br, you live in a place with many beautiful and interesting places nearby.
The best I could come up is with the Dewees-Remschel mansion. The good news is it is right around the corner, bad news is I have never seen it up close. One can rent it for parties and receptions it is supposed to be full of beautiful antique furniture. I have to take others word for that.

FredC - Why don't you 'book' the Dewees-Remschel Mansion for our 2024 KCA Convention.
It will be here before we know it!

Mackinaw Island, at the 'Straights of Mackinac', is about a four-hour drive and quick boat trip from my house.
It is a very popular tourist destination with a neat history.

Our Native Tribes called it "The Great Turtle" from its profile on the water. They thought it to be the home of "Gitchee Manitou", (The Supreme Being), and gave it due respect.
(BTW - The different spellings, Mackinac & Mackinaw, are due to French and English influences and maps. They are both pronounced the same).

The British relocated Fort Michilimackinac from the southern mainland to the Island, during the Revolutionary War.
The Island became part of the U.S. through the 'Treaty of Paris'.
A British-Canadian Force captured the Fort and Island, during the War of 1812. They gave it back through treaty. (See a 'Pattern', here)?

Mackinaw Island was our 2nd National Park!
After a brief period, the U.S. Government gave it back to the State of Michigan, because it didn't fit in with the 'period concept' of National Parks being natural wilderness areas.

The Island is very isolated in wintertime, with very few permanent residents. The Island Residents call us visiting tourists - "Fudgies".

Hey, we could hold the 2026 KCA Convention on the Island, if the State reopens the Fort's Shooting Range. The Mackinaw Island Fudge is Good!
