Shoot my eyes out!

Post by butlersrangers »

Searching on the internet, I saw this Krag "carbine", that someone cobbled together, that sold recently for more than it should have.

The barrel, stock, and barrel-band were once carbine parts, or spare parts.
The model 1898 receiver, #486573, is at the end of Krag production and not likely part of an original carbine.

The stock's checkering and adornments ruined a useful stock and hurt my eyes.

Some things cannot be unseen!

Maybe, the barrel is useful? The rear-sight appears to be a rifle sight.

Oh and to make matters worse, the rear sight is mounted backwards.

Two minutes with a screwdriver can fix the backwards sight, but it makes you wonder what else the person screwed up that is hidden.

Well, for less than $300, I would buy such a Krag, if the bore was 1/2 way decent.

The metal would look good after a bit of cleaning, reversing the rifle sight, straightening the cut-off lever, and installing a front sight blade.

The stock would look better with removal of the 'glop' finish and maybe working the forearm 'finger grooves' to deepen them and remove the bizarre lines?

The 'checkering' might look better with the finish gone or the wrist could be thinned to remove it.

I wager this eyesore could be made into a pleasant looking faux-carbine and put out of its misery, if reworked.

"Quasimodo" kind of grows on you by the end of the "Hunchback of Notre Dame".

Re: Well for less ... Yes! Some simple steps would greatly improve this carbine. Sincerely. bruce.

I don't remember the starting auction price.

It was high enough to convey that the owner saw this Hog's ear to be a rare and precious "silk purse".
