Winchester 30-40 scouting report

Here it is 2023 A. D. Now that I am practically out of Krag ammo and brass I need to see if Winchester still lists Krag ammo. (It's akin to having a case of fine expensive wine. You're practically out if you drink one bottle out of the case.)

https://catalogs.winchester.com/consumer

Their catalog shows 30-40 180 grain ammo (X30401) and brass (WSC3040KU) in the catalog. However. There is always a however. However just because it is in print does not mean it is or will be in production. Grafs ( https://www.grafs.com/catalog/product/productId/19593 ) says brass is out of stock and Midway ( https://www.midwayusa.com/product/2900394506 ) is discontinued.

Who should you believe? That's right. NO ONE! Believe your lying eyes. If you see it for sale, buy it. And like right now, too, because it will be gone if you blink or I get to it first.

So what have you learned? 1. Culpeper is a greedy SOB. 2. He will shoot you in the leg with a pellet gun to hobble you so he can get the brass and ammo first or if we are being chased by a grizzly bear. 3. Even I would not pay high prices seen today unless I was really, really hard up for ammo and brass.

All kidding aside. I usually do not advocate it but sign up with every place that claims to sell Krag stuff and their "email me when it is in stock" notifications.

What an annoying Winchester catalog! All Flash and nothing much useful. They should be sued for false representation and advertising.

Screw Winchester and Remington, or whoever owns them. They don't care about the old fart market.

Stock up on some .303 British brass.

Contact Hornady & Captech and ask them when they will produce a batch of .30-40 brass?

Contact Prvi Partizan - PPU and say: "Hey, opportunity here" !!!

USA big name ammo/gun companies just want to push the new caliber of the month.

Just keep your nose to the ground searching for solutions.

CapTech went into bankruptcy and was dissolved a few years ago.

Dang, no wonder Graf's was selling Captech and "Graphs" labeled (Captech) brass at such a good price.
They were selling 'bankruptcy inventory', which was great, till it ran out!

Seems to me, this is simply more opportunity to fill a vacuum, for a company like Prvi (PPU).
They certainly make many low demand early military cartridge cases.

I saw a story this morning on Remington... how the ammo company has been purchased out of bankrupsy by the same firm that owns Fedral. They said that they are going to bring it back to full capacity and return it to the prestige that it once held. If that's true, then maybe there's hope for Remington 30-40 Krag ammo and brass in the near future!

I bought a couple of 50 round boxes of the "new Remington Co." 9mm Luger ammo, off the shelf at Rural King, recently.

It was cheaper than all the other brands they had in stock. It was made in the U.S.A. and my 9mm pistols liked it.

I used to always buy the bulk Winchester stuff. It was always good, but got unavailable and is now very expensive.

I purchased 200 30-40 cases of hornady brass 2 years ago. I called hornady yesterday and they told me they will not be making a run of more 30-40 cases or loaded ammo in the near future. A nice guy on the phone, it seems they are swamped making the more "popular" calibers. A quick call to PPU brought a similar reply. Save that fired brass!

I do not believe the end is even close to being in sight. I think Lake City and the other ammo plants are running at near max production. Then you have to account for all of the other contractors, like Winchester, Remington, and Federal. I bet Peterson has a goverment contract, too.

So we just came off twenty years of war. Lake City may have kept up with the demand for our needs but now we have been throwing everything into the Ukraine. You have to know Prvi, Ruag, S&B and the other Europeans are throwing their production into that black hole.

Some are worried if the govenment will have enough if or when the communist chinks try to overrun the legitimate Nationalist Chinese government on Taiwan.

There are plenty of stories on citizen ammo shortages during second World War written back in the day. It would be prudent to re-visit them and freshen them up on these pages because, gentlemen, it can get a lot worst than it is already.

I pray that I am wrong.

All very true. There is never actually "too much".

Hornady makes 30-40 brass but it has also been "unavailable" for at least 10 months. I'm signed up with at least 5 retail outlets that will notify me (if or when) it comes in.
As a side note I found an excellent condition box of Remington 30-40 180gr ammo at a gun show last month. Headstamp is REM-UMC and the box dates it from '46 to '60. Box and ammo are clean and dry and it has been perfectly stored. They should shoot fine and afterwards I'll anneal the brass so it lasts a while. 20 good pieces of brass are a real find nowadays and should keep me going for another couple of years.
