Finnish Mosin SAKO M28/30
Finnish Mosin SAKO M28/30
Am I okay using 7.62x54R instead of 7.62x53R in an M28/30 with SAKO barrel — anybody have any experience with this? I’m going to slug the bore, but frankly expect a .308 result…

You might want to do a chamber cast and include a bit of the throat and barrel. The M28/30 and Ukko Pekko rifles were made knowing they might be used with Russian-made ammo. I've loaded for both and find that .308 bullets give better accuracy. I bought some very pricey D166 bullets for my Ukko Pekko, but found that ordinary Sierras shot better.
If you shoot the surplus Russian stuff (brass cases ONLY!), my experience is that every single round has to be checked for bullet diameter. Opening any of those nicely tied paper packets, some bullet diameters may be as great as .316 and won't even chamber. Might be better to pull all the bullets and use the stuff as components. I put the oversize bullets aside for use in my 7.7 Jap.

That is what I understand too - hopefully the 7.62x54R works. Will be slugging the bore this weekend.
