1896 Rifle with Windage Adjustable Sight

Post by DCRColoCity »

Hi, I recently bought a Model 1896 rifle in pretty decent condition. In researching about the various models of Krags, I read that the 1896 did not have a rear sight adjustable for windage, but mine does. Is this possibly a correct combination? Was this modification likely done by the Army at some point, or was it probably a change that was done after it was sold as surplus?

My 1896 cutdown carbine has the same sight. In fact, I just fired the first 10 rounds through it today since it was a Fathers Day gift. I highgly recommend Joe Poyers book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1882391314/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The sight and handguard in your picture is the model 1901 rifle sight and handguard.

It is possible that these parts were officially installed on your model 1896 rifle, during an Armory, Arsenal, or Depot "rebuild".

Most U.S. Krag rifles and carbines were rebuilt during the course of their service and National Guard use.

The 1904 Chief of Ordnance Report indicated the intention of simplifying from five Krag rear-sight models to just two, the model 1901 and 1902 rear-sights.
