Kvm1914 - You have a very wonderful model 1896 carbine.
All the parts appear to have been together for a long, long time.

I also believe this carbine has been this way for many years, in other words has not been "tampered with" in recent years.
The slightly broken handguard will remain on the carbine, I understand the difficulties in possibly repairing thin and fragile wood as this.
The carbine came from a collector who had owned it since 1980.
I agree it must have been "scrubbed" at one point, but that is probably many years ago.

There is a three-piece cleaning rod and a small oiler in the butt stock compartment.
