The first Krag shown is a cut-down model 1896 rifle, that someone altered for Deer Hunting.
The barrel was unofficially shortened and fitted with a model 1903 Springfield front sight.

I needed the stock and handguard that came on this altered Krag to restore a full-length model 1896 rifle.

I modified an 'overly short' cut-down model 1898 rifle stock to fit the 1896 action and improvised a faux carbine.
I kept the 1903 Springfield front-sight and added a Redfield (model-102), "no-drill", receiver-sight.

In regard to commercial .30-40 ammunition, it is regrettable that many wonderful classic cartridges are no longer available, 'over the counter'.

I would guess that there is a prime opportunity for a reputable ammunition company to seize the vintage cartridge market.
PPU/Privii does a remarkable job of covering numerous old military calibers
It would be wonderful if PPU broadened their line or if a US company 'partnered' with them, to improve distribution and the array of cartridges.

I don't think we will ever see the days again, when you can buy .30-40 ammo at a hardware store in 'Podunk'.

Krag shooters need to be Reloaders. Thank goodness reloading equipment is not too expensive and .303 British cartridge-cases can be substituted.

Just got of line. $5 per round seems a little steep. I can't reload, fingers don't work well at all. I do not know how many members we have but surely some pressure could and should be put on major ammo producers like Remington. We are after all their customer base and shoot more than 30-40. Are we just going out of style or is it our Krags ?

FWIW, back in 2019, I spoke with a Hornady rep at Camp Perry and he told me then that Hornady was going into production with 30-40... both with Brass and with loaded ammo - which they did! He told me that it would be an occasional run thing and that it would continue as long as the demand was there. Although a "seasonal" thing, I can't imagine Hornady NOT doing occasional runs with the current demand. As fas as I can gauge, the Hornady ammo sold like the proverbial "HOTCAKES!"

I take it that as a group we are not prepared to do anything. Sorta sad.

This past Saturday (9/7/23) I attended a gun show and scoffed at 3 boxes of .30-40 Remington ammo selling for $60 each...guess I should've purchased them. :|

Makes you sort of wonder how many times a box of ammo gets bought and paid for?

Butler's Rangers, maybe someone of this group's leaders could do some organizing - maybe a group letter to some manufacturers ? How many of us are there anyway ? I must admit to being sorta of a one trick pony, selfish about wanting to buy what I can't make. Here in the people's republic - aka MA I can't even find a member of my club who will reload even if I buy the dies. Do you have any ideas ?
