I dug out my copy of Hatcher's Notebook today, and found this on page 75.

The brass was likely compromised by the early mercuric priming.
Mercury actually chemically bonded with the brass of the case, upon firing the 'smokeless' ammunition, fatally weakening the cartridge-cases.
This led to the development of 'non-mercuric' chlorate priming, which was still corrosive, but allowed brass to be washed and salvaged.

HMMM. Made me think of shooting pigs from a helicopter. Of course the Maxim would need a brass catcher so the brass would not be scattered across the countryside.
My neighbors pay for a helicopter to thin them out about every 6 months. nice work to do and get paid for it.

Will look for the 8 minute one with no music.
