Hello, thank you for this information, already at least everything corresponds, the stock marked 1899 and thanks to the serial numbers you were able to find the year and even the month of assembly (great). I hope that one day we can know more.
Thanks to all of you I know that the marking on the stock is original and what it corresponds to, so I'm going to preserve it well because it's part of its history, I have the impression that there's a letter missing in front?

However, what do you think of the appearance of the original tan?
It's really unattractive, what should I do?
I wanted to redo a light tan, what do you think?

'Eric38' - Your Krag, serial number 182256, is a nice military rifle example.

Do not make wood and metal appear new.

Just rub linseed oil on wood and a penetrating gun oil on metal.

I hope you are able to shoot your Krag.

(The U.S. National Government issued Krag-Jorgensen rifles to all of the State National Guard Regiments, around 1903 to 1904.
By 1914, Krag rifles were replaced by Springfield model 1903 rifles. The Krag rifles then became War Reserve arms).

p.s. My French ancestors came to New France (Canada) in the 1600s. Most of the families were from Normandy and LaRochelle.

Hello ,
thanks for your help, i'm just going to take it apart to oil all the steel parts and
put some oil on the stock, i want to keep its patina.
Now I have another problem, I'm looking for a bayonet but I don't want to buy a
model that would distort the whole..
I think I need to find a bayonet with a year marked 1899 like my rifle, one dated 1898 would
be less logical? I find "1899 bayonets" very expensive..
By the way, why are bayonets so expensive?

Military surplus has increased considerably within the past 2 to 3 years. I personally attribute the increase in prices due to a renewed interest, by a younger generation of collectors, who are coming of age. The Krag Model 1892 bayonet is no exception! Numerous Krag bayonets can be found for sale all over the internet, especially on sites like eBay. In most cases you can probably expect to pay anything from $100 to $300 depending on condition. Most descent bayonets are going for around $200 to $250. Currently there are a few Krag Model 1892 bayonets, dated 1899, listed on eBay.

BTW: If your interested in purchasing a Krag Cadet, Bowie or Bolo…expect to pay thousands of $$$.

Good luck finding a Krag bayonet at a decent price!

And when you do find your bayonet of choice ensure it has a scabbard with it. I have a real Bolo and a fake Bolo. The real one has its scabbard. The fake one does not and never did. The same warning is especially for the Bowie and the Cadet versions.
