There is a serious academic group, mostly geologists, called "Friends of the Pleistocene". Last I heard (in last century), their HQ was somewhere in Ohio. These men & women (yes, many active women) were/are known for some strange stunts. One was a very formal dinner, fancy suits or dresses, 100+ people, in which the meat served was some well preserved (frozen) extinct species of horse, thawed, called something else, and served with some sort of sauce. I heard of another such dinner where they ate some frozen mammoth.

Back in the late 1950s, a senior member of the group was diagnosed with some sort of cancer, required an operation. He knapped the surgical tools to be used in his operation. The operation was successful, but the man died because the cancer was too widespread.
