You might think that is funny. But I have seen photos and heard some stories.
I have seen cows with the work COW written on the side with white latex paint.

Heard a story about a rancher that told the hunters dod not shoot my cows or it will cost you X amount of dollars (Years ago with inflation I do not remember the amount) one of the green horn hunters did not see any deer so he shot a cow, with the idea it would cost him extra money but he would not go home empty handed.

In Michigan, we put Blaze Orange 'jumpsuits' on the cows, before the November 15th opening of Firearms Season. :roll:

The murdered cow was the 'widower' rancher's blind daughter's first 4-H project & pet.

When i lived out west the locals called those critters "slow elk".
