Finished the 2023 Wisconsin Gun Deer with this nice buck. The rifle is a (go ahead and start laughing) Sears JC Higgins. But they are a real sleeper. Assembled in the 1950's for Sears by High Standard in the US. They imported commercial Belgian FN 98 Mauser actions and installed a chrome lined commercial barrel mounted on a nice stock with cut checkering. And an adjustable trigger. Sears only offered them in the catalog for about 2 years. They were $100 bucks cheaper than a Model 70 Winchester. And available in 30-06 or 270. You could order a 4X J C Higgins scope as an option. The scopes were a branded Weaver K4. A classic hunting rifle in 30-06. The deer was at 135 yards. One shot with 180 grain Hornady.

Nothing to sneer at in your photo. The gun, the deer, or the man.

That's a straight shooting rifle.

Nice looking Buck and a fine looking FN-Mauser hunting rifle.

A big shopping 'audience' and a large volume of sales could sure sweeten the deal for a production run by a quality manufacturer.

I'd say that your "J.C. Higgins Rifle" was a Win - Win - Win! You got an FN Browning without the ugly gloss and cost.

You're the one who's been laughing, for years!

1898 was a very good year for rifles! Yours is a wonderful example of what once were the everyday rifles that were available. Now, such rifles are few and far between. That is a beautiful buck! You are to be congratulated for both the rifle and the buck! Sincerely. bruce.
