An interesting 'Western Story' is that of the 25th Infantry (Buffalo Soldiers) Bicycle Corps.
Lt. Moss, a white officer from Louisiana, graduated last in his West Point class.
He was assigned to the 25th Infantry (Colored) Regiment at Fort Missoula, Montana.
Lt. Moss was a bicycle enthusiast and saw military potential in the bicycle for moving infantry forces.
His enthusiasm was shared by General Nelson Miles.

In 1896, Moss and eight Buffalo Soldiers made a trial run from Ft. Missoula, Montana, to Ft. Yellowstone, and back.
The bicycle trek was around 800 miles.

In 1897, Moss and 20 men from the 25th Infantry did an epic bicycle trip of 2,000 miles, from Fort Missoula to St. Louis, Missouri.

Attached are some photos from the 1896 Yellowstone trial run and the 1897 trek to St. Louis.

Also a link to Youtube videos about the bicycle trek and "Roughest Riders".
(You may have to use the 'back button' or move the red button & play line, at the bottom of the video screen, all the way to the left to get to the beginning of the correct video).

Charlie has a very nice Krag!

Thanks BR for sharing the "America's Black Soldiers on Wheels" link. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and it was a nice way of starting my 2024 year of YouTube watching. As a bicycle rider myself, I could feel my legs burn with pain watching that video!

No Donki, that is a 'space alien'.
A model 1892 Winchester carbine, chambered for the .38/40 pistol cartridge, is adequate to take them out.

(You are correct Donki. The grasshopper is a joke).
