I don't know why someone would fake a J. F. C. cartouche on a Krag. I don't think this cartouche, which appears real on op's Krag, is fake. It just adds a level of mystique to his rifle that we will not likely solve, as to why it's there, for certain. He has a great Krag treasure! Nice list Moose!

J.F. Coyle was working and stamping stocks beyond the 1906–1907-time frame.

In his book, "The Springfield 1903 Rifles", William Brophy lists the 'block' [J.F.C.] marking, being used, from 1905 to 1918.

I may be hallucinating or it could just be an optical illusion, but it is possible there is a faint 'remainder' of an earlier cartouche, above the JFC on the OP's stock.

A re-stamped block [J.S.A.], likely recycled during a rebuild, is also shown for comparison. The light colored wood is Italian walnut.

(Not fact, I am just 'puzzling' out loud, while trying to understand the practices during a very confusing Krag era, 1904 to 1918).
