Too bad, some 'civilian' file work ruined the originality of eye-piece and elevation slide of this model 1898 (Dickson designed) Krag rifle-sight.

Although, initially not a rare sight, the survival rate was not high. The obsolete sight bases and (leaf) springs were 'sold off' as scrap.
The m-1898 sight (leaf, slide, and locking knobs) were 'remanufactured' at Springfield Armory and used as components to build a variation of the model 1902 sight.

The model 1898 three 'notch' sights, designed for the short-lived 2,200 f.p.s. cartridge, are an interesting Krag story.

A complete rifle version, with all the right parts, is very hard to find. A complete and correct Carbine version is even harder to find.

Does a carbine sight look like this? Golly. I hope I can find one.

I agree with the seller. It is unaltered. ...by him.

Culpeper, that certainly appears to be a righteous model 1898 (Dickson) Krag carbine sight.

Are you gloating ... or did you misplace it in one of your 'bunkers'?

I have rarer Krag sights, but have never wanted to 'pony up' $300, to buy a good model 1898 'three notch' carbine sight.

Your photo shows a very nice sight!

I have a nice m-1898 rifle sight and an obvious fake "carbine" eye-piece in my sight stash.

Looks good, Culpepper - super-low rails; quickest way to spot at a distance. I was lucky, got mine MANY years ago, but took a long time to find the right carbine to stick under it.

That is a very lovely looking combination, Richard!

A first "block" model 1899 carbine, "with a compass in the stock and a thing that tells time" .... , oh sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Triple sight notches always messes with my mind!

These Model 1898 Krag sights sure are fun to learn about. I'm still studying and learning about them. They are out there but hard to find at reasonable prices today. I missed one on a cheap clunker I was watching recently but was out of town and couldn't bid on it. Also glad I got some a few years ago.

OK, Whig, I give up - you've got me outnumbered!

Seller says he will withdraw the sight - sounds like a careless, but honest, mistake - he was embarrassed..

To keep me off the streets, I sometimes tilt at windmills, as in contacting sellers of bad stuff on GB. Don't know why, I just do. As in life, some are a-holes, but most take it in stride, with a few even expressing gratitude for the clarification.

Here's the whole carbine - it also (falling in the correctl window) sports my one example of the headless cocking piece!
