My purchases in the last 72 hours

Post by 03collector »

Over the past 72 hours I have acquired a decent late model 1896 Krag rifle, serial number 99543. This falls within a batch of rifles issued to the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment (my home state). Also an early 1896 Krag carbine (AKA Model 1895), serial number 25028. This falls close to one that was sent to the San Antonio Arsenal. I have sent Springfield Research these two serial numbers to see if they have any further information in their database, but haven't heard back yet. I know these two items don't fall within the KAC forum parameters. A very fine Colt Model 1896 DA .38, 1899 dated on the grips. Lastly, a very nice early Rock Island 03, circa 1908. Last but not least, while attending our little 40-table gun show, a friend of mine had a cleaning rod for sale on his table, and to my amazement it is an original, 2nd type, for the Model 1892 Krag rifle. I gave my friend his asking price for the cleaning rod; I didn't think $100 was a bad price. This has been one of the bigger hauls in a while for me. Picture attached. If there is any interest, I will post separate topics with more photos of the rifle and carbine. Image

03collector,

Nice acquisitions, especially the Ram Rod! These (original ones!) are unobtainable especially if ever specifically searched for. Nice. Please post more pictures.

Pictures below: Upper two pictures, top one is reproduction, bottom one is genuine. Reverse in bottom two pictures. Hope yours is genuine!

'03collector' - Nice acquisitions at your recent gun show.

However, unless I'm sadly mistaken, U.S. Krag rifle serial number 99543 has to be a model 1896 rifle, (not a model 1898).

Is your nice stock repaired in the bolt-handle area? It appears to lack the normal 'scalloped' relief cut?

No it's dated 1898 and it's a 1896 type stock

The cleaning rod is just like the one on my 1892 rifle.

Oops, my bad - the serial number 99543 IS an 1896 model. I even posted my wrong reply twice. I've had a little too much Guinness on St. Patrick's Day.
