Re: Bought an 1896 Krag carbine
One more thing - I originally thought the serial number was 77508 but was told it is actually 77205. No hit on SRS but within a lot of 1st Volunteer Cavalry carbines (Yes, I know, a miss is as good as a mile, but I can dream, can't I???? ::)

Re: Bought an 1896 Krag carbine
I wasn't even looking for a '96 carbine - I assumed with prices being what they are that at best I'd have to settle for a '99 and maybe not that great of one to boot.

I checked with the seller and the rear sight is correct and not a reproduction, as are, apparently, the other parts. I don't t...

There was a copy of Brophy on the CSP Shopper a few months ago - $39.95 - it didn't last long!

Bought an 1896 Krag carbine
Just bought an 1896 Krag Carbine, serial no. 77508. Seems to have all the right pieces and parts but it is currently in New Jersey. Will post more pictures when it arrives in about 30 days (still have to raise some of the money!). 2000 yd. C-marked rear sight, correct bolt, saddle ring and front sig...

Re: BENECIA KRAG
I agree - most of the Krags sold as DCM rifles in the late 1920s had a BA-WL mark indicating they had been converted there. It is one of the few indicators, I believe, that allow you to tell a true DCM Krag carbine from one of the many turned out by Bannerman and other retailers during that period.

Re: 1894 Krag Rifle???
Boy, I'll say it's overpriced! Paid $615 for mine. There is another on the same website with a lot more realistic price - $875. I like my 1892/96 (probably the closest I'll ever get to an 1892) as most of them saw some service during the Spanish-American War and after.

Re: Two questions about Krag rifle sights
Krag rifle sights were designed for the 220 grain bullet.
From a reading of Frank Mallory's book on the Krag, it appears that BOTH 1902 and 1902 rear sights were fitted to later-model Krags, although it seems the 1901 was more common.

Re: serial numbers and such.
Kragkid,

I have said much the same thing on other forums in answer to those who try to read in too much to SRS. We should be eternally grateful to Frank Mallory for all the hard work he did compliling this information. I always mention two reservations, however:

1) As you said, rifles ...

Probably 1903, according to Mallory's book.
