Italian Walnut 1896 stock and hand guard

Post by Fred G. »

Theres an early 1898 model Krag rifle on Guns International that has a Field Replacement 1896 stock and hand guard made of Italian Walnut.
Its the 2nd example Ive seen of an 1896 Italian Walnut stock.

Pretty stock as a replacement. I like the 1896 Krag stocks. Nice but price is high.

Thanks for the link.

Nice Model 1896 Stock on the wrong model Krag.

IMHO - The stock is somewhat light in color but looks like black walnut to me.
I don't see any of the distinctive grain patterns that are usual in Italian stocks.

I think its Italian Walnut.
My 1896 also sports an unmarked field replacement stock.
Unmarked except for an inspectors initial behind the trigger guard. Just like mine.

Clearly American black walnut (Juglans nigra).

OK, I stand corrected then.
It IS nice, isnt it! Sharp with no wear to the edges.
If i had a nice 1896 barreled receiver, id be tempted to get it just for the wood.

I'd consider it too, Fred, if it was about half that price!

Isn't Cabela's usually over priced for firearms? Never bought anything from them.

If I had a spare 1898 stock with an 1896 handguard, Id just put the 1898 barreled action in it and sell it to get back most of what I paid to get the stock.
It sure is nice.

Yes, from what I've seen they are over-priced. This seems especially true for the older, more collectable, firearms.
