Post by cquickel »

OK,

What's the trick installing the slide detent and spring, inside the slide so the slide can slip on the sight leaf for the 1898 and 1903 rear sight???

I tightly pack the leaf 'pivot-pin hole' with a swatch of paper toweling. (The black arrow indicates the hole).

The goal is to flatten the 'dished/counter sunk' area on the left-side of the slide and prevent the 'dome' on the plunger from snagging on the lip of the hole.

Hold slide with 'locking-knob' fully backed-out and pointing 'up'.
Using 'gravity', loosely install the slide-spring, and plunger into their hole.
(Use tip of small screw-driver or tweezers, if necessary).

(Be mindful of slide and leaf orientation, so you don't put things together 'upside-down').

Hold leaf and slide sideways, with plunger assembly end of slide, 'down'.

Start the slide onto the leaf.
Stop short of the plunger & spring.

Carefully compress the plunger & spring with the flat of a small screw-driver blade.

Advance the slide onto the leaf until the leaf captures the plunger. (It may just catch the edge of the plunger and require additional compression to clear the 'dome').

With a bit of push and wiggle, the slide can be moved over the 'joint-pin hole' safely onto the leaf.

Once the slide is safely in place, paper 'plug' can be pushed out of joint-pin hole.

p.s. - It helps if parts are clean and lightly lubricated.ImageImage
