I suspect that the .30-40 brass was altered to use in a .405 Winchester lever-gun.

I second that observation. That brass has been altered.

I'm no expert... but I suspect resizing ain't gonna bring it back into spec!

I agree, but for the cost of shipping, figured if someone can use it for a wildcat round or something. Thankfully I headed the warnings from this site and others that 30-40 brass is not always plentiful and stocked up with several hundred rounds when it was a little over $0.50 each.psteinmayer wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 11:24 am I'm no expert... but I suspect resizing ain't gonna bring it back into spec!

Re: 30-40 Brass (sort of)
I was eyeing a new Winchester model 1895, in .405 caliber, and contemplated buying it, a couple of years ago.
The lack of Hornady ammunition, in that caliber, made me decide it was a dead end (and a rifle I had no real need for).
I guess, I really want a model 1895 in .30-40!
(I do recall searching and finding that reloaders were making slightly short .405 Winchester Brass out of .30-40, sigh).

Did you ever shoot a "straight from the factory" Model 1895 Winchester in .405 with factory loads? That might well be another deciding factor.butlersrangers wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 1:16 pm I was eyeing a new Winchester model 1895, in .405 caliber, and contemplated buying it, a couple of years ago.

I would have 'wimped-out' and loaded mild plinking loads for the .405 Winchester.
The connection to Teddy Roosevelt was what I savored.
