!898 magazine cutoff length

Post by Galvinator77 »

Bought a cut off for my buddies 1898 "carbineized" rifle that I put the M1903 front sight on ( in the 1898 cut down rifle forum string). Tried to install it and it appears to be too long. Should it have a shorter one or can I shorten this one to the correct length?

May have answered my own question. Removed the cutoff from my 1898 Carbine and it has a shorter cutoff shaft. Looks like I can just shorten the half round section of the one I bought for my buddies rifle and make it work. Any comments before I get the Dremel out?

It is pretty easy to find a model 1898 magazine cut-off lever. The longer shaft model 1896 lever is a bit less common.

If you have the time and want to establish a Krag parts stash, delay the Dremel, and get the original model 1898 part.

Thanks, since the 1896 one is less common won't modify it and will look for another cutoff. Not really trying to build a stash of Krag parts though. Will add it to the list of Garand and Springfield parts I need to sell.

Yep. 1898 cuttoffs will cost you about 15 bucks, easy to come by.
