Terrible Tribute- Makes Me Sick!

Post by Whig »

This is certainly not the way I would want to glorify and remember the past 3 years of covid crap shoved down our throats. Whoever came up with this idea should be run out of town!

"NORINCO COMMEMORATIVE"? They missed 'decorating' the sights and magazine base-pad!

Holy Rock-A-Moly! File this one in the "Things we never knew we needed... and really don't want" folder!

To be perfectly honest, I actually don't have any interest in most commemorative things... even if they are tastefully done. I'd much rather have the REAL thing that is being commemorated... well, except COVID - had that three times now and I really don't want a 4th episode!!!

A couple of years ago, the local gun shop had an 'X-rated' engraved 1911 Colt, that had reportedly belonged to porn publisher Larry Flynt.
It was chambered for .38 'Super' and the pistol's nickel plated exterior was totally immersed in the vilest decadent fornications and nude poses imaginable.

The 'engraver' probably went blind or was institutionalized for his tasteless spawn. The 'engraving' was of poor quality.
Yes, it had likely been the property of Hustler's Larry Flynt.

I would not touch, handle, or view it (beyond a quick disgusted glance). It made me feel unclean and that maybe I should seek out therapy or a Confessional.
I was glad when it was finally gone from the showcase.

Repent! .... or pent, if you're a beginner.

Paul,

I have the same opinion of commemoratives. I have no desire to add any to my collection. I like the old vintage items that have or may have been used by real people. Lots of history in these real firearms used by soldiers in wars past. Beautiful (or not!) works of art belong hanging on a wall somewhere, not in my safe next to my 120+ year old Krags!

The only 'commemorative' firearm, that I own, is a cased Colt 1851 Navy percussion revolver (Ulysses S. Grant commemorative) with accessories.
I've never fired it. I take it out of the 'Safe' once in a while to look at it. It has not increased much in value, as an investment, but it is neat.

U.S. Grant is a 'hero' to me.

It is a "Second Generation" black powder Colt. Ironically manufactured in 1971 by Iver Johnson, probably from Italian parts, for Colt Patent Firearms.

I do own a number of nice replicas, bought 'used', that are a joy to shoot. I would not be able to afford to do that with original pieces.

I'm due to inherit my dad's trapdoors when he's gone. One, a non-Custer 1873 Carbine is in as issued condition, save the mild pitting from corrosion that I cleaned up. The other is a Bannerman 1873 rifle mix-master that I have actually shot a few times (dad now forbids me from shooting it anymore, LOL). The rifle once had a brass plaque on the butt stock that was attached with brass tacks, most likely to commemorate someone or something significant by the previous owner. The plaque was removed before my dad got it (purchased in the early 1960s at a farm sale), but I wish I had it because that would be a part of the rifle's history!

It's not that bad! Really! A little bead blasting and then have it parkerized or Cerra-coated.

Paul,

You are sure fortunate to still have your father with you to enjoy so much fun family history. Great stories about the firearms you two have shared. When he is thru with this part of his life and moves on, do you plan to shoot that 1873 Bannerman again, in his honor, of course?!!
