This makes one wonder: Why or What Happened to the stamping dies or in the process to make some Krag receivers so easily misread? As pointed out by others, 3, 5, 6, 8 & 0 are often confused. Also, I often see 'Model 1896' confused with 'Model 1898', although the two Models have numerous obvious differences to the trained eye. Some Krag Receivers are easily read, while others call for magnification. Any insights?

the only thing I would say was a bad die or a bad spot in the metial or possible damage over the year or someone trying to cange a number for a reason of value or to cover up something else.
