Does this one have the hold open notch? I did not see the hold open pin on the extractor. Maybe they were off to the side? Possibly only partly upgraded?

no, no hold open notch on receiver and no pin on the extactor, the rifel was not upgraded.

Maybe there is some confusion as I mentioned another rifle I have with four digit serial number that was, indeed, upgraded to 1896.

You have an older M1892 bolt with the squared lug under the bolt handle. Early Krag square lugged bolts had the serial number on them. Does yours?
